Somerset County Communications Center

Sharon Carey, Dispatcher / Supervisor

Experience

I have been with Somerset County since 2000. I graduated from the classroom training program and moved on to the OJT (On-the-job Training) stage before becoming a full-time employee. Since that training I have passed my final practical and final written exams. I also have been to the CTO (Certified Terminal Officer) training through the Maine Criminal Justice Academy giving me the knowledge to use the state and federal computer systems to relay vital information to law enforcement officers; EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) Training allowing me the ability to assist callers by giving prearrival instructions for emergency calls; and CPR to compliment my EMD training. As I gain experience to do the job, through working and trainings, I hope to give the caller the very best service possible.

My background comes from many facets, though when I started this job, I didn't believe that they would be of any use to me in my new career choice. I was told by my trainer and supervisor, these traits were tools that would enhance my learning and the performance of my job. I now see that throughout my life there has been many events which has and will assist me at the Communications Center.

My Family

Interest and Hobbies

I have quite a few favorite pasttimes, but the most important is my family. I love spending time with my family.

My step daughter Ashley is 13 years old, she has lived with us since she was four. She is an honor roll student. She enjoys playing sports, especially basketball. She likes to listen to music and talking on the phone (too much! possible future dispatcher?) and being on the computer.

My other daughter Alexandra (known to all of us who know her and lover her as Lexi) is seven. Lexi is learning to read, enjoys crafts and coloring. She loves to swim and will spend most of her summer in the pool.

My husband Mike is a carpenter, and has recently gone into business with Gene Bolduc. Together they have formed G&M Builders. He enjoys listening to music and watching movies on his DVD/surround system. He enjoys playing basketball and watching sports on TV as well.

I have a fairly large family, with most of them living in Maine, and trying to get to visit with them as much as I can. My sister, Shelley, and her husband, Kevin, are expecting their first child at the end of June. I am patiently awaiting the arrival, and looking forward to being an aunt again. My father lives in Moscow and is building a new house for him and his girlfriend. My brother also lives in Moscow in the house that we grew up in. My mother and step-father live in Florida, and we love to visit as much as we can. They come to Maine as often as they can too. I have four other half-brothers as well.

I like planting a flower garden and tending it throughout the sumer, and house plants. I collect glass paperweights, and enjoy finding unique shapes and designs. I also have a small collection of vintage Pillsbury dough boys.

My other favorit past-time would have to be shopping, especially when a good clearance sale is involved. I find that shopping is a good stress reliever for me, although it seems to add more to my husband's (I can't understand it?).

We enjoy doing things as a family, usually we seem to manage to have a good time no matter what we are doing or where we are, and I love that about my family. I can't forget to mention my friends, that I try to spend as much of my free time with.

And for all of these things I feel very fortunate, I am truly a very lucky person.
