Somerset County Communications Center

Mike Hill, Dispatcher

Experience

I began my Law Enforcement journey way back in November 1995 when I graduated from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy's 100 hour course. Little did I know where this would bring me in my career.

In February 1996 I was hired by the Somerset County Sheriff's Department for their Corrections division, as a Reserve Corrections Officer. From my experience in the Corrections division I learned the various processes of the jail, slowly building a working knowledge of police work through constant contact with Law Enforcement officers working within the county.

In July 1996 I was hired full-time as a Corrections Officer. In September 1996 I transfered into the Communications Division of the Sheriff's Department as a full-time dispatcher, filling a recent vacancy. I had been training there since April 1996 as a Reserve Dispatcher.

During my years working as a full-time dispatcher, I also worked as a Police Officer for the Fairfield Police Department for approximately 2 1/2 years. This experience taught me the "other side" of the radio. This has been very valuable cross-training, as I was able to use dispatch knowledge to enhance my police work and vice versa.

Hobbies and Interest

I love spending time with my family. As you can see, I have a lovely wife and 3 beautiful daughters. The younger ones are constantly on spin-dry and tend to keep us very busy.

When I have free time, I also like to play computer games, occasionally over the internet with some of my friends. I collect coins, play soccer, collect comics, play baseball and collect Topps New York Yankees baseball cards. I also love going to see good movies in the theater. I like DVD...but nothing beats digital surround sound and a giant screen. And if that should leave me any time at all, I love to read a good book - I'm currently trying to finish up the Lord of the Rings trilogy (again) so I can stay ahead of the movies.
